Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her youth, however she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Neben PR, her agency has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as Urban Beauty Collective.
